DAY 42

Today has mostly been spent with my family but I have had some time to conduct some research into Gallery identity systems and have found some very inspirational examples.  After an initial search I reviewed all the visuals I had found and began the process of collating the best of the best into a concise PDF which I could share with the team. I focused my search mainly on the large, well known UK galleries, mainly as I assumed they would have the largest budget for design and therefore the strongest identities. I do think there will be some exceptionally well designed smaller gallery brands but as my time is limited in this task I chose to adopt the safe route and go for the big guns! After all a global gallery should hope to compete with the likes of the V&A or the MoMA. I do think I need to also consider a more global approach and also conduct research on the main galleries in Europe and across the world. I’ll ask my team mates advice on further sources of inspiration.

My visual research so far is shared below.

I also spent some time brainstorming for potential names for our hypothetical gallery and created a mindmap of  ideas, which I have also shared below. I have chosen four possible solutions:

1. STREAM
– Representing free flowing movement, energy, continuity
– A stream of people
– Online streaming of media

2. GAG
An Acronym for global Art Gallery

3. The Collective
I think collaboration and inclusion are key words in the global art gallery and the collective is representative of those notions

4. THE GAME
An Acronym for The Global Arts Movement Enterprise

Although my working time has been relatively short today I believe I have used my time effectively and been very productive and for that I am pleased. Having reviewed the inspirational material I have gathered I now have some ideas for a direction I’d like to take for our gallery identity. The strongest designs for me, were the ones which offered the most flexibility, The MoMA and the Barbican stood out in particular, both having strong word marks which tie the differing media and formats together. Their colour pallets are bright and bold and offer a multitude of options without compromising the visual perception of the brand. It is this malleability that I believe gives the brand its strength and it is this that I aim to emulate in the design for the global gallery.
